Get Involved

When I first got my "ticket" as a technician almost 10 years ago I did it for one specific purpose.  It was to enable me some type of communication when I was out hiking and camping.  I studied for my test, took it and passed.  Then I did some research and purchased my first radio.  When it arrived I quickly realized I had no idea what to do with it.  But I charged the battery and put it in my backpack and went camping with it anyway.

Trying to use it wasn't difficult, but I didn't make any contacts.  I did more research and still only had limited success.  That's when I realized I needed help.  With the help of Google I did some searching and found an Amateur Radio club close to my home.  It was a very small club, but the people there were helpful and I was able to understand how to use my radio.

Now lets fast forward to moving to Davis County.  I stepped out of my comfort zone and reached out to the Davis County Amateur Radio Club and found a ton of great people willing to help everyone.  After watching and listening for a while I decided to get involved and help out at an event the club was providing communications for.  I explained I really didn't know what I was doing but I wanted to help.  The members were great and gave me the information and tools I needed to be successful.  I found that using the radio and volunteering to help out was fun, educations and helped me to better understand the hobby and improve my skills.

I am far from an expert at radio, but I am now very confident in my skills and where I need to learn more.  By getting involved I was able to learn the hobby and obtain the skills needed to communicate via radio instead of just Yelling for help on a frequency where there may or may not be any help.

Here are some example of ways you can get involved:

1. Volunteer to help at events like parades, races, air shows, etc.

2. Join a radio club in your area and attend the meetings.

3. Ask questions.  Someone is going to have an answer

4. When you are ready help others who are just starting out.  Become an Elmer!

These are just a few suggestions.  There are many other ways to get involved, I just wanted to share how I did it.
